Тhe movie «Chervona Ruta – 1989» was assembled in 1990 in New Jersey (USA). Film director was Kyrylo Stetsenko , the Ukrainian violinist, composer, music and television producer, educator and social activist. The film includes footage of the first festival of contemporary music and popular songs «Chervona Ruta» that held in 19 – 24 of September 1989 in Chernivtsi.
Thousands of people visited the festival from all over Ukraine and abroad (USA, Argentina, Australia, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, etc.) Can recognize themselves among the spectators of the competition and concert festival «Chervona Ruta – 1989».

«Chervona Ruta» as a phenomen emerged in the days of the Soviet Union in 1989, during the first festival in Chernivtsi, when the national youth music was hold. «Chervona Ruta» made a real «revolution» in Ukrainian culture, which has influenced the whole society. The festival gave birth to a new youth music, which had not existed. Earlier Ukrainian youth, not having their national heroes, was forced to settle for a podium Moscow, or listen to western pop stars.
Opened by «Ruta», the new wave music has gained popularity in Ukraine and the Ukrainian diaspora. Many of the songs performed at the festival for the first time, immediately became hits that are sung by millions of people. Winners of the «Ruta – 89» and their songs took first place in all the charts and various surveys. Instantly, yesterday completely unknown musicians have become a common Ukrainian youth idols late 80's – early 90's. For the next year Ukraine all sang «Ruta» songs: Vasyl Zhdankin, «Braty Hadiukiny», Sestrychka Vicka, Andriy Mykolaichuk , Olexandr Tyschenko, «VV», Iryna Bilyk, Marichka Burmaka, «Tryzubyi Stas» and others.
